5 Internationally Gay & Lesbian & Aquatic Things You Should Know about This Week

The 2015 season of the FINA Men’s Water Polo World League kicks off Tuesday November 18, with the first home-and-away games of the three European groups.

US reality TV star Nicole Ritchie recently took the plunge and took up synchronized swimming on an episode of her AOL Originals reality show, Candidly Nicole.

World OutGames Miami, scheduled to take place in 2017, has launched a crowdfunding campaign. The funds raised will be primarily used to provide financial assistance to athletes from around the world who would otherwise be unable to participate in the games. Some of the funds will be applied toward operations, as well as World OutGames Miami’s efforts to reach LGBTQI athletes across the world. Just a little over a month remains of the 60-day campaign hosted by Indiegogo, and the games have raised less than $5,000 to date.

As we approach Eurogames Stockholm and IGLA 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden, AdFreak reminds us that 20 years before it was cool to cast gay couples, Ikea made this pioneering ad:

The 1994 spot, from Deutsch, ran after 10 p.m. in three markets where Ikea then had a significant presence: New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The late-night airing ensured that the ad wouldn’t be seen during “family hour” programming.

With Russia set to hold the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan (watch out for wild dogs) and with The FINA Order having been awarded to Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, on October 9, 2014, Elton John spoke out against Russian homophobia during a concert in St Petersburg:

“As a gay man, I’ve always felt so welcome here in Russia. Stories of Russian fans – men and women who fell in love dancing to Nikita, or their kids who sing along to Circle of Life – mean the world to me. If I’m not honest about who I am, I couldn’t write this music. It’s not gay propaganda. It’s how I express life.”

His most recent album, The Diving Board, was released in 2013.
