Synchro at IGLA 2013

By Gareth Johnson, IGLA Co-Chair & Christian Bordeleau, IGLA Synchro Task Force Chair

Details of IGLA 2013 in Seattle are firming up with the schedule of competition now available here.

Synchro will be sharing the pool with diving – kicking off on Wednesday 14th August and running through until the afternoon of Saturday 17th August.

In terms of facilities at the competition, there will be:

  • Carpeted entry platform
  • 25-meter and 30-meter course settings
  • OMEGA electronic judging and scoring system

With many of the European teams opting to stay closer to home next Summer for the worldOutgames in Antwerp, the synchro competition at IGLA 2013 is looking like it will be dominated by the US teams.

Beyond the LGBT competitions, one of the big issues for synchro teams around the world is the issue of equality within masters synchro events, as for most events male synchro swimmers are excluded from competition. While there was considerable media interest in this issue in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games, further work is required with the relevant national governing bodies to try and achieve recognition of male synchronised swimmers within the masters world. IGLA’s synchro taskforce continues to lead on this issue.
